Universal Beams
Otherwise known as I-beam, UBs, I section, RSJs, RSJ beams, h beam, steel lintels steel girder and load-bearing steels. These steel beams are hard-wearing and robust. RSJ or Rolled steel joists are very popular in the building trade used mainly for steel lintels.
BS4 (the British Standard for Structural Sections) lists UBs (Universal Beams), UCs (Universal Columns), and Joists. RSJ stands for Rolled Steel Joist.
These are all rolled steel sections, but only one of them is a joist. You can also get welded sections and cold-formed sections. Universal stainless steel Beams and Columns are used in commerce and industry but also machinery and equipment building.
I Steel Beams
I beams are shaped like the letter 'I', they are commonly made of structural steel but may also be formed from aluminium or other materials. An I-beam is just one piece of metal throughout and is not caused by welding or riveting sheets of metal together.
A common type of I-beam is the rolled steel joist (RSJ). These sections have parallel flanges, as opposed to the varying thickness of RSJ flanges which are seldom now rolled in the UK. Parallel flanges are more comfortable to connect to and do away with the need for tapering washers.
I beams are mainly used in the construction industry and are available in a variety of sizes. I beams are very lightweight in comparison to various other types of structural steel. The I-beam is often lighter, but this is desirable in some buildings where weight and force on a wall may pose a fundamental issue.
H Steel Beams
These are named after the alphabet "H" because its cross-section shape is similar to this letter, is an economical section steel with more optimized section area distribution, more reasonable strength-to-weight ratio.
H Beams are commonly used in the construction of buildings as well but also large trailers and bridges, among others.
Due to their slightly different cross-section shape, thicker central web and broader flanges. The average weight of H beams is higher than that of I beams, meaning they can withstand more force in specific applications.
The thicker centre webs of H beams mean they are slightly more robust than I beams; therefore, H beams can carry larger loads than I beams. And that is why some say that it is better than the I-beam, but that is subjective, as the H-beam is generally heavier. The H-beam has a bevel where three pieces of metal come together and look like one piece of metal.

- 1 cm4 = 104 mm4 = 10-8 m4 = 0.024 in4
- 1 cm3 = 103 mm3 = 10-6 m3 = 0.061 in3
- 1 cm2 = 102 mm2 = 10-4 m2 = 0.16 in2
- 1 kg/m = 0.67 lb/ft
We use the typical approach for defining the measurements of a common hot rolled steel section. This consists of making use of initials to assign the type of section.
For example, UB 457 x 152 x 60, is a Universal Beam of small dimensions 457 mm deep, 152 mm broad and weight 60 kg/m.
